The landscape of Twenty20 cricket is witnessing significant transformations as new leagues emerge and existing ones expand, fueled by substantial investments and strategic partnerships.
In March 2025, Saudi Arabia announced plans to launch a groundbreaking global T20 league, backed by a $500 million investment from its sovereign wealth fund. The proposed eight-team tournament, inspired by tennis's Grand Slams, aims to feature matches across four different locations worldwide each year. This initiative is led by Australian cricket figure Neil Maxwell and has been in development for over a year. Discussions with the International Cricket Council are ongoing, with the league expected to be financed by Saudi Arabia's SRJ Sports Investments.
In the United States, Major League Cricket is gaining momentum. In June 2024, Australia's Test and ODI captain, Pat Cummins, signed a four-year contract with the San Francisco Unicorns, marking a significant addition to the emerging MLC T20 competition. The league's second season commenced on July 5, shortly after the T20 World Cup concluded in the United States and West Indies. Cummins, a highly recognized fast bowler and accomplished leader, joined fellow Australian cricketer Jake Fraser-McGurk at the Unicorns. Other prominent Australian players, such as Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, and Steve Smith, are also part of the league.
In the Gulf region, the DP World International League T20 is set to commence its fourth season on December 2, 2025, coinciding with UAE National Day. The six-team, 34-match tournament will conclude on January 4, 2026. This scheduling adjustment was made to avoid a clash with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for February-March 2026. The ILT20 aims to provide players with ample preparation time for international duties.
Additionally, the ILT20 has entered into a partnership with the Kuwait Cricket Board to promote and develop the sport in Kuwait. This collaboration includes organizing domestic events, such as the DP World ILT20 UAE Development Tournament, in Kuwait to identify and develop local talent.
In Africa, Cricket Kenya has formalized a partnership with AOS Sport Tournaments to establish the 'Cricket Kenya T20' league. This strategic collaboration aims to elevate Kenyan cricket by providing a platform for local and African associate member nation players to showcase their talent.
These developments underscore the growing global interest and investment in T20 cricket, reflecting the sport's expanding reach and popularity across continents.
